The first session of the "Electronic Payment for Financial Stability in Iraq" conference, organized in collaboration between the Prime Minister's Office, the Central Bank, and the Iraqi Private Banks League, discussed the role of financial and monetary policies in supporting the banking sector and digital transformation. The session featured the Director General and Chairman of the Arab Monetary Fund Board, Fahd Bin Mohammed Al-Turki; the Chairman of the Finance Committee, Atwan Al-Atwani; the Prime Minister's Advisor for Banking Affairs, Dr. Salih Mahood; and the Chairman of the Iraqi Private Banks League Wadee Al-Handel. The Director General of the Arab Monetary Fund highlighted the critical role of financial policy in driving digital transformation, noting that automating payments in government services is feasible. He stressed that digitalization cannot be fully realized without an electronic payment system to support services and government initiatives. Furthermore, he underscored the potential of the government and the Central Bank to play a pivotal role in Iraq's digital transformation. Meanwhile, Finance Committee Chairman Atwan Al-Atwani stressed the importance of promoting the culture of electronic payment in society to boost non-oil revenues. The government's efforts to expand bank accounts, banking cards, and points of sale have yielded significant progress in a short time, with notably positive results in electronic payments, according to Dr. Salih Mahood, the Prime Minister's Advisor for Banking Affairs. Financial inclusion in Iraq is projected to reach 48.5% by the end of next year, according to Wadee Al-Handel, President of the Iraqi Private Banks League. He highlighted that the number of bank accounts in 2020 was 6 million, and by 2023, it had reached 13 million accounts.
